WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) — Tony Shaver is out as William & Mary's basketball coach.

Athletic director Samantha K. Huge made the announcement Wednesday and the school says a national search for Shaver's successor is already has started.

Shaver compiled a 226-268 record in 16 seasons with the Tribe and led them to two of the program's three appearances in the National Invitation Tournament. William & Mary also reached the championship game of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament four times, most recently in 2015, but never won and remains a program that has never participated in the men's NCAA Tournament.

In her announcement, Huge said Shaver "is a teacher not just a coach and his impact on hundreds of young men will be felt by them for years to come. However, we have high expectations for our men's basketball program, including participating in the NCAA Tournament, and we will not shy away from setting the bar high."
