San Diego 61, Santa Clara 59

Roberto Mafra had 14 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks to

lead San Diego over Santa Clara 61-59 in the first round of the

West Coast Conference tournament Friday night.

Chris Lewis added 12 points for sixth-seeded San Diego (11-20),

which will play third-seeded Portland in the quarterfinals

Saturday. Brandon Johnson added 11 points for the Toreros a game in

which neither team built more than a five-point lead.

Robert Smith led the seventh-seeded Broncos (11-21) with 16

points and five rebounds. Michael Santos added 11 points and six

rebounds.

After Johnson converted a free throw with 10 seconds remaining,

Smith missed a driving shot from the right side with 3 seconds

left. Santa Clara never got off another shot.

After the Broncos took a 49-44 advantage with 9:02 remaining,

the Toreros rallied and took the lead for good 54-53 on Mafra’s

three-point play with 3:40 left.
