Penn State tops Nebraska 58-54
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) D.J. Newbill scored 16 points, including 12 in the second half, to lead Penn State past Nebraska 58-54 Thursday night.
Penn State (10-10, 1-6 Big Ten) finally won its first conference game of the season after losing its first six. Nebraska (9-9, 1-5) couldn’t sustain the momentum of its biggest win of the season, a 68-62 win over No. 17 Ohio State on Monday.
John Johnson scored 13 for the Nittany Lions, and Brandon Taylor and Tim Frazier each had 11.
Terran Petteway paced the Cornhuskers with 15, and Ray Gallegos added 10.
Nebraska pulled ahead at the 14:20 mark of the first half, led 29-22 at halftime and held the lead for the next 30:01. Penn State finally grabbed the lead with 4:19 left in the second half as Newbill scored on a driving layup to put the Nittany Lions up, 47-45.
The Cornhuskers stole the lead right back on the next possession as Shavon Shields grabbed the rebound on a missed foul shot and hit a 3-pointer at the other end.
Nebraska built its lead to 51-47 with 2:24 to go, but the Nittany Lions battled back. Brandon Taylor hit a foul shot and Donovan Jack made a putback to pull Penn State within 51-50.
Penn State’s full-court press forced a Nebraska turnover on the next possession. In a scramble for the loose ball, Frazier dove onto the floor and grabbed the ball. He sat up and threw a two-hand, overhead pass to Newbill, who drove the lane and threw down a thunderous dunk and was fouled. He made the foul shot and Penn State never trailed again.
