North Dakota 71, Texas-Pan American 70

Troy Huff and Patrick Mitchell scored 12 points each as North

Dakota held off a late rally by Texas-Pan American to take a 71-70

victory in the first round of the Great West tournament on

Thursday.

Trailing 62-61 with 2:42 left, the third-seeded Fighting Sioux

(17-14) went ahead for good when Huff put in a layup to spark an

8-0 run.

The sixth-seeded Broncs (6-25) weren’t finished, though, scoring

five straight points to make it 69-67 with 42 seconds left.

Aaron Anderson made a layup with 11 seconds remaining to put

North Dakota just out of reach. A 3-pointer by Aaron Urbanus with 7

seconds to go couldn’t close the gap for the Broncs.

Urbanus led the game with 18 points while Jared Maree scored 13,

Ruben Cabrera 12 and Kieondre Arkwright 12.

The Fighting Sioux will play No. 7 seed Houston Baptist in the

semifinals Friday.
