Michigan Basketball: Wolverines a No. 10 Seed in Latest Bracketology

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:46 p.m. ET

Michigan basketball got a huge win over the Indiana Hoosiers Sunday and as a result, the Wolverines are a No. 10 seed in the last bracket projections.

The Michigan basketball team is squarely on the bubble, but a road win over Indiana Sunday was a positive sign for the Wolverines NCAA tournament chances.

Truthfully, both teams came into Bloomington on the bubble. But Michigan, sitting at 5-6 in the Big Ten and winless on the road, desperately needed the win and behind a stellar outing from Derrick Walton Jr., the Wolverines got it thanks to a 75-63 victory.

The win improved Michigan basketball to 16-9 overall and 6-6 in the league. And according to Jerry Palm of CBS Sports , the win means, that as of now, UM is in the big dance. And not even the first four.

Palm, who released his projections earlier this morning, has the Wolverines as a No. 10 seed in the East Region. The opponent is Xavier.

Palm’s projection is good news, although he always seems to rate UM higher than Joe Lunardi of ESPN.

Lundari hasn’t released his newest projection. His last bracketology came Feb. 10 and at that point, Michigan was out. And it wasn’t even among the first four out.

It will be interesting to see where Lunardi places Michigan basketball, but it’s hard to see how beating Indiana can move the bar a ton. The Hoosiers are 5-8 in the Big Ten and 15-11 overall.

The Wolverines should find themselves among the last four teams in the bracket, but as you can see, there is plenty of work to do.

At least, the Wolverines have now won a road game. But more than that, they need a defining win over a highly ranked team. (It just so happens, that Wisconsin is coming to Ann Arbor Thursday).

If Michigan basketball can win that game at home, its prospects would improve immensely. But with other tournament teams such as Minnesota, Purdue and Northwestern also on the horizon, it’s not do or die.

At this point, as long as Michigan keeps winning, it will have nothing to worry about.
