American beats VMI 74-64 for best start since 2010-11 season

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) — Sa'eed Nelson scored 26 points, Sam Iorio had 18 points and 14 rebounds and American beat VMI 74-64 on Tuesday night.

American (4-1) is off to its best start since the 2010-11 season.

Marvin Bragg opened a 10-0 run and Iorio closed it for an 11-point lead with 7:37 left in the game. VMI was within 68-64 with 1:35 to play but American made 6 of 8 free throws down the stretch.

Stacy Beckton Jr. had 12 rebounds as American outrebounded VMI 49-29. Nelson, a junior, notched the fourth-highest scoring game of his career.

Bubba Parham, averaging 24.3 points per game, led VMI (5-3) with 30 points and Greg Parham added 14. Bubba Parham was 7 of 18 from the field, with four 3-pointers, and 12 of 14 from the free-throw line. The Keydets were going for their first 5-0 start at home since the 2013-14 season.
