The Sidelines: Avery Johnson talks Mark Cuban, Nick Saban and life at Alabama

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Another week, and another awesome new episode of “The Sidelines Podcast” with FS1 college basketball insider Evan Daniels! This week, Evan welcomes a very special guest to the show: former NBA Coach of the Year and current coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Avery Johnson.

Johnson hit on a number of topics, in this wide-ranging interview (which can be heard in its entirety above), including the following topics:

  • Expansive background on his playing career. He gives one very interesting detail about Tim Duncan that not many people know, and explains why David Robinson would have been the perfect player for the modern NBA.
  • His time as an NBA head coach. He discusses why Mark Cuban is possibly the best owner in sports and also how meeting with LeBron James as a free agent is similar to recruiting high school athletes.
  • What life is like Alabama. Specifically, what has he learned from Nick Saban? Also, Johnson expands on the Crimson Tide's 2017 recruiting class, which includes five-star prospects Collin Sexton and John Petty.

Those are just a handful of the subjects that Evan and Coach Johnson cover during a must-listen interview for both college and pro basketball fans. Also, later in the show, Evan is joined by FOX Sports' college hoops writer Aaron Torres to discuss the state of SEC basketball as a whole. Can schools like Alabama, Florida and Auburn one day catch up to Kentucky?

And remember, this is just the latest episode of “The Sidelines Podcast,” as Evan welcomes some of the biggest names in college hoops to the show. You can find all the episodes here, but previous guests include Hall of Fame Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, Villanova's Jay Wright and former NBA All-Star Dan Majerle.
