Expect Langford back in the starting lineup for Gabe Brown, but it's unclear if the team will manage his minutes overall in the game.

Held out as precaution Langford (knee) was held out of Friday's win over Detroit as a precautionary measure, Kyle Austin of MLive.com reports.

Impact Langford was warming up for the Spartans prior to Friday's contest, but the coaches and trainers decided to hold him out as a precaution. Coach Tom Izzo said that the senior could have played if he was needed, and he stressed that the injury isn't serious. Despite his absence Friday, Izzo said that Langford will be back on the court Sunday against Western Michigan, Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Impact Langford was once a lights-out shooter and top recruit for Tom Izzo, but multiple injuries have kept him on the sidelines for nearly two years. Now healthy and ready to play out his final season of eligibility, look for Langford to be a difference maker in the MSU backcourt. To get an idea of the type of production we may be looking at, look no further than the 2017-18 season, when Langford started all 35 games and averaged 11.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists. He was on his way to well surpassing those marks in 2018-19 before the injuries hit. In each of his three seasons of collegiate ball, Langford has shot 40 percent or greater from beyond the arc.

Impact At one point it looked like Langford might be done with basketball altogether, but Izzo acknowledged that "he's played really well," which presumably means he'll have some sort of role in 2020-21. If he's any shell of the player that started 35 games in the 2017-18 season for Michigan State, Langford will provide massive scoring and three-point shooting boosts for the Spartans. With the season just over two weeks away, it's starting to look like Langford has a great chance to lock down the starting shooting guard spot.

Role taking form Langford (foot) is about "as close to over the hump as you can get" according to head coach Tom Izzo, Brendan Quinn of The Athletic reports.

Impact Langford hasn't taken the court the last two seasons for Michigan State due to foot surgery and follow-up complications, so Izzo is careful with his words when discussing the health of his presumed starting shooting guard. Once a top-25 overall recruit that came in with the same class as Cassius Winston and Miles Bridges, Langford now finds himself as the veteran with an entirely new supporting cast. The Spartans expect him to be less of a volume shooter and play a bit more efficiently on this go-around, as well as lean on his defensive capabilities alongside starting point guard Rocket Watts. Getting 30-plus minutes per contest seems unlikely out of the gates, but reaching that level of contribution down the road isn't outside the realm of possibility.

While there hasn't been much in terms of an update on his health, this is a player with a tremendous ceiling that could take on a major role. Langford last appeared in the 2018-19 season, but has been plagued by foot injuries ever since. He's played in 83 total games with the program, shooting 40 percent or better from beyond the arc in all three seasons he's been active. Should he get a clean bill of health, pencil Langford in as the starting shooting guard, as well as a sleeper candidate to lead the team in scoring.
