On Feb.7, 2015, former North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith passed away, leaving behind a larger-than-life legacy on and off the court. In accordance to his will, however, the Hall of Famer left behind even more for his former players.

Smith willed the Dean E. Smith Revocable Trust to send a $200 check to each of his varsity basketball lettermen. He left behind simple instructions as for the purpose of the gift: "Enjoy a dinner out compliments of Coach Dean Smith."

The notation on the check reinforced those intentions: "Dinner out."

Checks were sent to approximately 180 former players, according to reports citing Tim Breedlove, the trustee tasked with disseminating the letters and checks.

Smith retired after the 1997 season with 879 career wins under his belt, which still ranks fourth all-time in Division I history, but, as the endless supply of memoirs and tributes documented after his passing, his off-the-court contributions will be remembered just as vividly.

Maybe more so.
