Australian Darchinyan retains WBC, WBA titles

Australian Victor Darchinyan scored a unanimous decision against

Rodrigo Guerrero of Mexico City to retain his WBC and WBA super

flyweight titles Saturday night at The Show inside the Agua

Caliente Casino.

The judges scored the bout 118-110, 117-111 and 120-108.

Darchinyan (34-2-1, 27 KOs), known for his spectacular

knockouts, couldn’t put down the tough Guerrero, whose head was

rocked back numerous times. The only time Guerrero (13-2-1) went

down was from a slip at the start of the 10th round.

Late in the bout, Darchinyan landed multiple heavy punches

against Guerrero, even knocking out the challenger’s mouthpiece in

the seventh round.

In the co-main event, Australian Lenny Zappavigna (23-0, 15 KOs)

claimed the vacant IBO lightweight championship with a unanimous

decision over Fernando Angulo (22-7, 14 KOs), who came into the

bout three pounds overweight.

Angulo, from Caracas, Venezuela, could not have won the title

because he failed to make weight.
