Mickey Ward’s mom dies at 79
The mother of boxing champ Micky Ward, portrayed by Oscar-winner Melissa Leo in "The Fighter," died Wednesday in Boston, The Lowell Sun reported.
Alice Ward had been hospitalized since she had a massive heart attack in January. She died at age 79 Wednesday morning, one day after she was taken off life support.
"We lost the leader of our family," said her son Dicky Eklund, who was portrayed by Christian Bale in the film.
"She was a great woman, a strong woman. She taught us all what it means to be strong because she never gave up on any of us," he added.
Leo famously dropped the f-bomb when she nabbed the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in February for playing the tough-as-nails matriarch that was the driving force behind her son’s career.
Bale also earned an Oscar for his role in the film that also starred Mark Wahlberg and Amy Adams.
