Former Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino hired as third base coach of the Braves

ATLANTA (AP) — Former Baltimore Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino was hired Friday as third base coach of the Atlanta Braves under new manager Walt Weiss.

Mansolino had been the Orioles' third base coach since 2021. He then replaced Brandon Hyde on May 17. Mansolino led the team to a 60-59 record after a 15-28 start under Hyde.

Tony Mansolino will join the club as the major league third base coach, while J.P. Martinez will serve as the major league bullpen coach. Mansolino, 43, joins Atlanta after serving the previous five seasons with the Baltimore Orioles on their major league staff. He spent more than four years as the club’s third base coach before being named interim manager on May 17, 2025. The Newport Beach, Calif. native guided Baltimore to a 60-59 record (.504) after his appointment. Prior to his Orioles tenure, Mansolino held multiple roles in Cleveland’s system from 2011-20. He was a hitting coach (2011-15), manager (2016-19), and infield coordinator (2020) at various levels. A graduate of Vanderbilt University, the former infielder was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 26th round of the 2005 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Mansolino appeared in parts of four minor league seasons for Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, reaching as high as Double-A in 2008. Martinez, 43, was San Francisco’s pitching coach last season, a role he was promoted to in October 2024. Under his tutelage, the Giants’ bullpen posted the third-best ERA (3.44) in Major League Baseball. From 2021-24, Martinez aided the club as an assistant pitching coach. While he was on staff, San Francisco pitched to the seventh-best ERA (3.81) in MLB. Martinez first entered the affiliated coaching ranks in 2015, when he was named the rehab coordinator and GCL pitching coach in Minnesota’s system. He advanced to be the Single-A pitching coach from 2016-17 and the assistant minor league pitching coordinator from 2018-2020 before departing for San Francisco. A native of Metairie, La., the former right-handed reliever was chosen by the Twins in the ninth round of the 2004 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of New Orleans. Across five minor league seasons, four with Minnesota and one with Baltimore, Martinez pitched to a 17-14 record and a 3.36 ERA. ###">Weiss was promoted Monday to manager from bench coach.

J.P. Martinez will be bullpen coach after one season as San Francisco's pitching coach.

Craig Albernaz was hired last week to manage the Orioles. He had been the Guardians' associate manager.
