Shawn Charles resigns as ASU wrestling coach

Shawn Charles has head coach at ASU for five seasons.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Shawn Charles has resigned after five seasons as Arizona State’s head wrestling coach.

Charles is an ASU alumnus and was a four-time All-American for the Sun Devils (1990-93) and a two-time NCAA runner-up during his collegiate career. He had one season of head coaching experience (Fresno State) prior to his hiring at ASU and had been an assistant coach at Missouri, Brown, Nebraska, Central Michigan, Oklahoma and Iowa State.

"We thank Coach Charles for the contributions he has given to his alma mater during his tenure," athletic director Ray Anderson said. "We will launch a national search immediately for his successor. Our wrestling program has enjoyed success as one of the premier programs in the country, and we are intent on regaining that status going forward."

The Sun Devils had two third-place and three fourth-place finishes in the Pac-12 during Charles’ five seasons. They qualified one wrestler — sophomore Blake Stauffer — for this year’s NCAA Championships.
