CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Northern Arizona men’s basketball team opened its season on the road at Xavier today as it fell to the Musketeers 93-60 at Cintas Arena.

"We played a well coached and talented Xavier team," NAU coach Jack Murphy said. "They took it to us in the first half. We knew coming in it was going to be a battle but we just didn’t rise to the challenge."

The Musketeers (1-0) jumped out to an early lead over NAU (0-1), as they used their hot shooting to stay one step ahead of the Lumberjacks.

Xavier shot 63.6 percent from the floor in the first half to take a commanding 48-22 lead into halftime versus NAU. After starting 2-for-9 from the floor to begin the game, the Lumberjacks ending up shooting 28.1 percent from the floor as it struggled from all over.

At the half, Ako Kaluna led NAU with five points, while Jordyn Martin had four points and three boards.

In the second half NAU’s offense came to life but Xavier’s defense enabled the Musketeers to keep their lead and secure the win.

Quinton Upshur turned it on in the second half leading all players with 20 points. Kaluna was the only other Lumberjack to record double-figures with 10 points. Martin went on to finish with six points and six rebounds.

Both teams recorded 16 turnovers apiece, in addition to a foul count of 18 on both sides.
