Howard, Harden want Asik, Lin to remain in Houston

Even though Dwight Howard has only been a member of the Houston Rockets for a short time, GM Daryl Morey says the newest face of the franchise, along with James Harden, will be calling the shots from now on.

Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik’s names were tossed around in trade rumors amid the speculation that Howard would sign with the Rockets, however Houston’s new center and Harden made it known they would rather the two stay in town.

And that is the way it is going to be, according to Morey.

“The reality is James and Dwight want to play with Jeremy and Omer,” Morey said Saturday after introducing Howard in a news conference. “I’ve been kicked down to assistant GM. They’re going to be here.”

Only one problem for the “new Rockets GMs,” Asik officially requested a trade in response to the news of Howard’s signing, a request denied by the organization, because he likely thought his role with the team would be reduced greatly as the two play the same position at center.

Howard doesn’t see it that way. He envisions Asik, as well as Lin, to be key pieces for the future of the Rockets and their championship aspirations.

“Omer might not really see the total big picture right now, and I totally understand,” Howard told the Houston Chronicle. “He’s a big piece to us winning a championship if we’re going to make that run. He and Jeremy Lin will be very good playing with me.”

Howard may have been known in the past as selfish, but he is making it known that won’t be the case in Houston as he has only one thing on his mind: help his new team win a championship. Starting with repairing any damaged relationships with Asik, Lin and the Rockets.

“I’m going to do whatever I can to make those guys’ lives better,” Howard said. “I realize how much they mean to this team.”
