’s college football power rankings

1. Alabama Crimson Tide    3-0     —

The Crimson Tide cruised past Colorado State and now have a test in Tuscaloosa on Saturday against No. 22 Ole Miss (No. 21 in AP poll) and its tuned-up offense.

2. Stanford Cardinal    3-0     —

Don’t let the final score against Arizona State fool you: The Cardinal led 29-0 at the half. Washington State in Seattle is next up.

3. Oregon Ducks    3-0     —

Cal heads to Eugene this week to see if it can throw it well enough to stay with the Ducks. Oregon is giving up just 9.0 points per game thus far.

4. Ohio State Buckeyes    4-0     —

The legend of backup QB Kenny Guiton grew some more with six TD passes against Florida A&M. The Bucks have Wisconsin on Saturday. Will it be Guiton or Braxton Miller at QB?

5. Clemson Tigers    3-0     —

The Tigers passed a “danger” test on the road at NC State last Thursday, and now the country implores them to stay awake until the Florida State showdown on Oct. 19. They have Wake Forest at home in Week 5.

6. Louisville Cardinals    4-0     +1

No, the schedule has not come close to providing a test, but QB Teddy Bridgewater and Louisville’s defense forced a running clock in the second half against Florida International. The Cardinals are off this week before visiting Temple on Oct. 5.

7. LSU Tigers    4-0     -1

The Tigers jumped on Auburn, and now things gets serious with a trip to No. 10 Georgia (No. 9 in AP poll) on Saturday, QB Zach Mettenberger’s original school.

8. Oklahoma State Cowboys    3-0     -2

A colleague told me I have the Cowboys over-ranked, but I like the way they are playing defense. They are at struggling West Virginia on Saturday.

9. Texas A&M Aggies    3-1     —

No hangover from the Alabama loss, as the Aggies pounded SMU. They now head to Arkansas on Saturday, and the Hogs let one get away at Rutgers last week.

10. Georgia Bulldogs    2-1     —

The Bulldogs had people checking in on them as North Texas kept it close into the third quarter last week. QB Aaron Murray would like to add LSU’s pelt to his collection this Saturday.

11. UCLA Bruins    3-0     —

The Bruins showed maturity and purpose these last two weeks in a win at Nebraska and a home dismantling of New Mexico State while mourning the death of a teammate.

12. South Carolina Gamecocks    2-1     —

They had the weekend off, but the Gamecocks have a game to be concerned with this week at UCF. The Knights’ quarterback, Blake Bortles, can play.

13. Oklahoma Sooners    3-0     —

The Sooners had last week off and now head to Notre Dame on Saturday. It will be QB Blake Bell’s first career road start.

14. Florida State Seminoles    3-0     +1

The same colleague who thinks I’m too high on Oklahoma State also tells me that I have FSU under-ranked. FSU will easily move up if it stays clean through the Clemson game in a few weeks.

15. Miami (FL) Hurricanes    3-0     -1

The Canes crushed Savannah State (why are they on any power team’s schedule?!), but QB Stephen Morris’ ankle injury is a cause for concern.

16. Washington Huskies    3-0     +2

U-Dub dominated Idaho State and now welcomes unbeaten Arizona and Rich Rod on Saturday. Huskies QB Keith Price is playing better than ever.

17. Michigan Wolverines    4-0     -3

Back-to-back underwhelming wins over Akron and at UConn. Will a Big Ten game against Minnesota in two weeks get the Wolverines’ attention?

18. Northwestern Wildcats    4-0     -1

Two defensive touchdowns off interception returns helped sink Maine. The Wildcats now get a bit of time off before Ohio State comes to Evanston on Oct. 5.

19. Notre Dame Fighting Irish    3-1     +1

A very good win for the Irish in Week 4, as Michigan State kept imploding with 115 yards in penalties. No. 13 Oklahoma (No. 14 in AP poll) arrives on Saturday.

20. Baylor Bears    3-0     +3

The 70-7 win over Louisiana-Monroe certainly caught my eye, as ULM is better than most think. So is the scoring machine that is Baylor.

21. Florida Gators    2-1     —

The Gators got a comfortable win over Tennessee despite losing QB Jeff Driskel for the remainder of the season. The defense forced six turnovers against the Vols, and now backup QB Tyler Murphy takes center stage.

22. Mississippi Rebels    3-0     —

The Rebels head to Alabama to take on the nation’s top-ranked team. They will face three current top-10 teams in a four-week stretch starting this Saturday.

23. Fresno State Bulldogs    3-0     —

The Bulldogs are back on the national scene after a HUGE win at home over Boise State propels them into the rankings.

24. UCF Knights    3-0     —

I’m eagerly anticipating the visit from No. 12 South Carolina on Saturday night in the biggest game this week involving a school from Florida.

25. Texas Tech Red Raiders    4-0     —

Baker Mayfield, Davis Webb — it doesn’t matter who’s playing QB, because he produces in head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s offense regardless.
