Coyotes acquire Archibald from Pittsburgh, send Strome down to Tucson

The Coyotes made a pair of moves prior to Tuesday night's game vs. the Florida Panthers, sending center Dylan Strome to the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League and acquiring forward Josh Archibald and Sean Maguire from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for goaltender Michael Leighton.

The Pittsburgh deal also included an exchange of 2019 draft picks, with the Penguins getting a fourth-round pick from Arizona and giving up a sixth-round pick to the Coyotes.

Archibald, 5-foot-10 and 176 pounds, was placed on the Coyotes roster, with Strome sent down to make room. He's played in three games this season for Pittsburgh and six for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL, where he had one goal and two assists. He is 25 and was a sixth-round draft pick of the Penguins in 2011.

Strome has played in 11 games for the Coyotes this season and recorded his first and only NHL goal in a 5-0 victory over New Jersey on Dec. 2. He piled up impressive offensive numbers with Tucson earlier this year but struggled to make an impact with the Coyotes and saw his ice time cut late in last Saturday's loss to Pittsburgh.

Nick Merkley, a first-round draft pick in 2015, will make his NHL debut for the Coyotes.

Maguire, 24, has an 8-3-0 record, .910 save percentage and 3.28 goals against average with Wheeling in the ECHL.

Leighton, 36, was acquired from Tampa Bay in the November trade involving Louie Domingue.
