Coaching legend Brown holding tryouts at SMU
Tuition at SMU isn’t cheap, but at least now it comes with a chance to play for a Hall of Fame coach.
SMU coach Larry Brown has put out a casting call in search of students willing to be walk-on players for the upcoming season.
Student tryouts will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at SMU’s practice facility, the Crum Basketball Center adjacent to Moody Coliseum.
“Walk-ons are an important part of the team,” said Brown, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame who won an NCAA title at Kansas and an NBA title in Detroit. “They have a special place in every good college basketball program. We hope to find one or two students that can help our team.”
To be eligible to try out, students must be enrolled full-time (taking at least 12 hours of courses) and have a completed physical on file. A student must also meet all NCAA eligibility requirements to make the squad.
Participants can register and turn in physical forms by contacting the SMU men’s basketball office at 214-768-4629 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Like all walk-ons, anyone picked from the tryouts will have to do the work of a regular player without the perks of an athletic scholarship. But at least they will be able to say they played for a basketball legend.
