Case McCoy wins back-up quarterback job for the Longhorns

The Dallas Morning News

Case McCoy, younger brother of former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, has edged Connor Wood in a battle of incoming freshmen to be the backup to starting quarterback Garrett Gilbert.

Wood was the higher-rated prospect coming out of high school, but Longhorns coach Mack Brown said “that decision was made because Case has handled the huddle better and he’s managed the teams and protected the ball better at this point.”

Brown also wondered if McCoy should get experience right away, especially if Texas builds a big lead Saturday against Rice.

The backup QB job is key, especially after Case’s brother, Colt, was injured in last year’s national title game and Gilbert was forced into duty.

“Do you put him in the game early trying to get him experience,” Brown asked. “There’s a lot of unsettling things this week that we probably won’t decide until Thursday or Friday.”
