Milwaukee ready to sign Betancourt
MAR 26, 2013 2:53p ET
First reported by FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, Betancourt will sign a one-year deal with the Brewers pending a physical.
Betancourt, 31, spent spring training with the Philadelphia Phillies, hitting .447 with one home run and 14 RBI in 47 at bats before asking for his release Sunday because he wasn't added to the 25-man roster.
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told reporters in Phoenix on Tuesday that Betancourt will serve as a backup at second base, shortstop and third base.
With his signing, utility infielder Donnie Murphy will not make the club.
In 2011, Betancourt hit .252 with 13 home runs and 68 RBI for the Brewers, who won the NL Central Division.
He signed with Kansas City last offseason and hit .228 with seven home runs and 36 RBI in 57 games.
