Brewers minor-league stars of the week: May 26

Triple-A Colorado Springs outfielder Logan Schafer has 11 hits in his last 29 at-bats to raise his batting average to .241.

Each week FOXSportsWisconsin.com identifies the top pitcher and position player from the Milwaukee Brewers’ top four main affiliates: Triple-A Colorado Springs, Double-A Biloxi, High-A Brevard County and Low-A Wisconsin. Here’s a look at all eight players who made the list for the week of May 18-24.

TRIPLE-A COLORADO SPRINGS (1-3)

Player of the Week: OF Logan Schafer

Week stats: .400 (6-for-15), 1 2B, 3 RBI in 4 games

Recent highlights: The Sky Sox were limited to just four games this past week after their scheduled home series with Round Rock was washed out completely. Schafer had six hits and three RBI in Colorado Springs’ four-game weekend series in Salt Lake. After starting 2-for-25 in Triple-A, Schafer has 11 hits in his last 29 at-bats to raise his batting average to .241.

Pitcher of the Week: RHP Tyler Cravy

Week stats: 1-0, 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K

Recent highlights: Cravy picked up Colorado Springs’ lone win of the week by allowing just one run on three hits over six innings against Salt Lake on Friday. It was just the third quality start of the season for the 25-year-old right-hander, who lowered his ERA to 4.61 on the season by limiting the Bees to one run.

Player of the Week: OF Michael Reed

Week stats: .429 (6-for-14), 2 2B, 1 3B, 4 RBI, 2 SB in four games

Recent highlights: Before getting hurt in Thursday night’s extra-innings victory over Birmingham, Reed continued his hot stretch at the plate by hitting .429 with three extra-base hits in four games to start the week. Reed, who has a .349 batting average with nine extra-base hits in May, has missed Biloxi’s last four games with an undisclosed injury. He has hits in six of his last seven games and 10 of his last 12.

Pitcher of the Week: LHP Brent Suter

Week stats: 1-0, 6 IP, 7 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Recent highlights: Making his first start since April 30, Suter pitched six scoreless innings in Biloxi’s 4-1 victory over Birmingham on Friday. The Harvard product entered with a 5.59 ERA in two starts this season. Suter has allowed just one run in 13 innings (0.69 ERA) as a reliever.

HIGH-A BREVARD COUNTY (2-5)

Player of the Week: 2B Chris McFarland 

Week stats: .333 (10-for-30), 2 2B, 1 RBI, 3 SB in seven games

Recent highlights: McFarland continued his torrid May by collecting four multi-hit games last week. The 22-year-old went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles against Fort Myers on Thursday and had a seven-game hitting streak snapped Sunday. McFarland is hitting .379 in May to raise his season batting average to .309.

Pitcher of the Week: RHP Jorge Ortega

Week stats: 14 IP, 10 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 0.64 ERA in two starts

Recent highlights: Ortega was a victim of bad luck last week, as he went 0-2 despite allowing just one earned run over 14 innings. Against Clearwater on Monday, Ortega went all nine innings in Brevard County’s 2-1 loss. The 21-year-old allowed two runs, one earned on seven hits while striking out six. Ortega followed his stellar outing up by not allowing an earned run over five innings Saturday at Fort Myers.   

LOW-A WISCONSIN (4-3)

Player of the Week: OF Elvis Rubio 

Week stats: .364 (8-for-22), 1 2B, 1 RBI in seven games

Recent highlights: After losing 14 of their first 15 games in May, the Timber Rattlers finally had a winning week. Rubio, 20, was the only Wisconsin player to hit over .300 for the week, as he had three multi-hit games. The Dominican outfielder is hitting .252 in 147 at-bats during his first season at Low-A. 

Pitcher of the Week: RHP Cy Sneed

Week stats: 8 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Recent highlights: Sneed bounced back from a rough start against Kane County on May 17 by holding the Cougars scoreless over eight innings Thursday. The 22-year-old Dallas Baptist product has a 1.81 ERA over 44 2/3 innings (nine appearances, seven starts) in his first full season of professional baseball.
