MADISON — A night after posting its first win in a season-opening game since the 2007-08 campaign, third-ranked Wisconsin held off Northern Michigan by a 2-1 margin in men’s hockey action Saturday. The win gave Wisconsin its first season-opening sweep since 2004-05.
Wisconsin (2-0-0) got goals from Nic Kerdiles and Grant Besse in its win, which took place in front of 9,516 at the Kohl Center. Besse put the Badgers over the top at 16:25 of the third period, tallying a goal off assists from teammates Michael Mersch and Joe Faust.
Joel Rumpel served Wisconsin well between the pipes, recording 20 total saves. Northern Michigan (0-2-0) got its lone goal from Luke Eibler.
Wisconsin returns to action next Friday at Boston College, at 6 p.m.
