Running back D.J. Morgan, who has missed just about all of training camp also with an undisclosed injury, won't be making the trip either.
Earlier in the week, Kiffin said he had a feeling there would be "number of guys" to miss the trip because of injury. If the staff ruled a player out for Thursday's game, they would be left behind to rehab. Redd and Morgan were among the ones to fall into that category.
That leaves freshmen Justin Davis and Ty Isaac, along with Tre Madden, and Buck Allen to share the carries. Three of those players have never carried the ball in an NCAA game. Allen carried it only six times last season.
If Davis or Isaac start on Thursday, that person will join former Sylmar High star C.J. Gable as the only true freshmen to start a season opener at Tailback U.
As far as a starter, however?
"We don't have one yet," Kiffin said.
The USC head coach did reveal some starters. Before the team departed Tuesday, he announced Josh Shaw and freshman Su'a Cravens will start at safety.
As for quarterbacks Matt Wittek and Cody Kessler, Kiffin says he knows who will go first on Thursday but declined to reveal his selection.
"I'm not going to tell you the end of the movie before you go to the movie, right?," he said. "Now you're going to have to watch."
