U-M’s Lewan: Mustache tattoo a chick magnet

Ann Arbor — Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Lewan admits it. He craves attention.

“I like attention,” he said. “I’m an attention guy. I LOVE the attention.”

Perhaps that explains the unusual “mustache” tattoo on the side of his right index finger.

All he has to do is put his finger across the bottom of his nose and there’s the mustache.

It’s apparently a great way to meet females.

“I mean it’s the best icebreaker in the world. You go up to them,” Lewan said, putting his finger in place to reveal the mustache, “‘Miss, let’s be serious, I just want to dance.'”

Lewan, a 6-foot-8 redshirt freshman, made his first start for the Wolverines last week against Bowling Green.

He said he got the tattoo when he was 17 years old, but the idea goes back to third grade.

“My friends thought it would be a cool idea to draw a mustache on (his finger),” Lewan said. ” I was like this is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. I have to do this for real.”

He did and now he’s getting much-coveted attention for it.

Injury update

Quarterback Denard Robinson, as expected, is probable for Saturday’s Big Ten opener at Indiana.

He bruised his left knee in the first half against Bowling Green and didn’t return.

Coach Rich Rodriguez said Robinson will be limited in what he does during Monday’s practice.

“He’s been getting treatments,” Rodriguez said. “Hopefully, he’ll be able to do everything (Tuesday).”

… Running back Michael Shaw is “day-to-day” because of a sprained knee. The status of Fitzgerald Toussaint, another running back, is also in question because of an injured shoulder.

… Rodriguez said he’s “optimistic” Carvin Johnson (knee) and Brandon Herron (ankle) will return to the lineup. Johnson, a true freshman, started the opener at the hybrid linebacker/safety position. Herron is a reserve linebacker.

Living in the present

Rodriguez isn’t looking back to last season, when the Wolverines started 4-0 but lost seven of their last eight.

“It’s in the past,” the coach said. “Didn’t you see the movie ‘The Lion King’? The monkey hits the lion on the head. The lion says ‘What did you do that for?’ (Monkey) says ‘It doesn’t matter, it’s in the past.’

“You can’t take it back. Last week’s last week. Last year’s last year.”
