Reign fall at Indoor Winter Classic in Vegas

Kyle Clifford tied the game 1-1, but Ontario went on to lose 3-2.

LAS VEGAS, NV – The Ontario Reign (21-8-1-1) fell in the Indoor Winter Classic to the Las Vegas Wranglers (14-13-1-3) in a close 3-2 match before 3,991 at Orleans Arena where fake snow fell from the rafters for the game.

The Wranglers lit the lamp first as Andrew Sarauer sent a shot toward JF Berube. The Reign goaltender almost stopped it but the puck found its way under Berube’s pads. The two teams kept up the end-to-end play throughout the frame.

The Reign got their stride in the second period when Kyle Clifford tied the game 1-1 for his fourth tally in a Reign uniform.  He beat the Wranglers by poking it past Joe Fallon for the equalizer. Brock Sheahan and Brady Calla assisted the play. With just 23 seconds left in the second frame, Brock Sheahan struck again this time scoring the Reign’s get-ahead goal with a one-timer from the slot. The defenseman was set up by forward Jason Beeman and fellow blue liner Justin Pender.

Las Vegas matched Ontario’s energy in the third period scoring two to tie and eventually win the game. The score was knotted at 2 when Eric Lampe received a hard pass from the blue line and shot it past Berube’s blocker side. With 3:54 left in regulation Josh Lunden scored the game-winner for the Wranglers. He picked up a feed from Sarauer as he came in quick on Berube’s right side. Judd Blackwater also earned a point on the goal.

Fallon earned the win stopping 16 of 18 shots while Berube took the loss with the 19 saves on 22 shots.
