Angels’ Conger stars in Fourth of July parade

Angels catcher Hank Conger had a busy holiday Thursday. In the evening, he was the starting catcher for the Angels. In the morning, he was a grand marshal for the 109th annual Huntington Beach Fourth of July parade.

Conger described his parade duties thusly: “Just kind of wave to people.”

For Conger, the greatest thrill was meeting Lou Ferrigno, the actor who played the Incredible Hulk on TV.

“I don’t know if I’m famous,” Conger said. “He is.”

Conger grew up in Huntington Beach, which bills its annual Fourth of July parade as the largest west of the Mississippi. The parade lasts two hours. As a kid, Conger said, he would just go to the end of the route and catch a taste of the festivities.

“That was the first time I’ve seen the parade from start to finish,” he said.

His parents, presumably, would have been thrilled and delighted to sit and watch their son pass by as a grand marshal of the hometown parade.

“My parents couldn’t find a seat,” Conger said. “They just kind of walked around.”
