McCoughtry double-double lifts No. 7 Louisville

Angel McCoughtry scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead No. 7 Louisville past Marquette 66-61 on Monday night. Freshman reserve Janae Howard tied her career high with 13 points as the Cardinals 27-3, 14-2 Big East) overcame a turnover-plagued first half to tie a school record with their 27th win. Angel Robinson scored 19 of her 26 points in the second half for Marquette (16-14, 7-9). Louisville committed six turnovers in the first 8 1/2 minutes and 18 for the game as a swarming defense by Marquette kept the Golden Eagles within striking distance until the final moments. The second half became a duel between McCoughtry, Louisville's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, and Robinson, the Golden Eagles' leading scorer this season. McCoughtry prevailed, scoring 19 points in the second half. She also grabbed a key defensive rebound and a loose ball and hit five of six free throws during the final two minutes. Louisville, which finished second in the Big East behind Connecticut, won its sixth straight game and built momentum for the Big East tournament, which begins Friday. Marquette led by as many as nine - 15-6 - in the first half, but Howard started a 19-4 run by the Cardinals, converting a three-point play and hitting two 3-pointers. The Cardinals' reserves outscored Marquette's 18-0, and Louisville took a 35-32 lead into halftime. Louisville led by as many as eight early in the second half, but Robinson responded with six straight points. After the Golden Eagles' defense forced Louisville into a 5-second violation on an inbounds pass with 9:14 remaining, Marquette's Krystal Ellis, hit a 3 from the left wing and Marquette took their only second-half lead at 48-47. Moments later, Louisville tied it and eventually built a five-point lead.
