Welterweights Rhodes and Sullivan added to Chicago UFC on FOX event
Following the cancellation of a pair of preliminary card match-ups over the last week, next Saturday’s UFC on FOX event scheduled for the United Center in Chicago had another fight added to the line-up on Tuesday.
UFC newcomers Mike Rhodes (6-1) and George Sullivan (14-3) will now square off in welterweight action on the January 25 event. The UFC officially announced the pairing on Tuesday via their UFC News Twitter account.
After losing a scheduled heavyweight bout between Jared Rosholt and veteran Oleksiy Oliynyk early last week, both Pascal Krauss and Adam Khaliev withdrew from their welterweight contest over the weekend due to undisclosed injuries. The UFC said they planned on filling the void left by the removal of Krauss and Khaliev, and this new pairing does just that.
Rhodes, a student of Milwaukee-based coach Duke Roufus and training partner of UFC lightweight champ Anthony Pettis and former featherweight contender Erik Koch, carries a two fight winning streak into his Octagon debut. Most recently, “Biggie” earned the RFA welterweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Alan Jouban in October. The lone blemish on his resume came in a showdown with rising UFC welterweight prospect Brandon “Rukus” Thatch.
The reigning Cage Fury Fighting Championships welterweight champion, Sullivan is a long-time training partner of UFC veteran Kurt Pelligrino, and boasts a six-fight winning streak, including four finishes. He hasn’t lost since 2011.
