The UFC’s international expansion in 2014 continues with two new shows announced on Thursday including the promotion’s return to Ireland as well as Germany.
The first show confirmed will take place on May 31 in Berlin, Germany at the O2 World Berlin Arena. This will be the third trip for the UFC to Germany after UFC 99 was held there in 2009 and UFC 122 in 2010.
The card dubbed UFC Fight Night Berlin will happen on the same date as another UFC Fight Night card in Brazil. The UFC has long teased that there would come a time when multiple events take place on the same day and it appears that premonition has come true.
The other event announced on Thursday will see the UFC return to Ireland on July 19 for an event, most likely to be another UFC Fight Night card that will air on UFC Fight Pass, the promotion’s online digital network.
UFC officials have stated for years that they wanted to return to Ireland, which has a rabid MMA fan base, and now they will get a show this July.
The timing could work out for Irish bad boy Conor McGregor to return to action in his home country for the July 19 card following his recovery from knee surgery that’s kept him out of action since last year.
No fights were announced for either fight card, although official announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
