UFC 208: Patrick Côté Warns Anderson Silva Ahead of Brunson Fight

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 12:41 p.m. ET

Patrick Côté warned Anderson Silva to take his upcoming fight against the powerful Derek Brunson at UFC 208 “very seriously.”

Speaking on The Heel Hook Show with Cage Pages’ Nick Strickland, UFC welterweight fighter Patrick Côtè warned Anderson Silva to take his upcoming fight against Derek Brunson “very seriously” and labeled Brunson a “dangerous” opponent.

“He’s getting older and I think that his next fight is a dangerous fight for him because I think that Derek Brunson is a dangerous fighter in this division.”

Côté also warned “the spider” to be wary of Brunson, who is coming off of a loss, saying: “He has to take this fight very seriously and it’s going to be the first time that Anderson Silva is fighting a guy who lost his last fight, in his last 15 fights.”

Silva, who is on a four-fight losing streak, hasn’t had a win since 2012 and Côté picked up on that, saying: “As much as I respect Anderson Silva, with his kind of mentality you can see what happened. You know, I think he’s on a four-fight losing streak, so his last win was against Stephan Bonnar.”

The Canadian did, however, heap praise onto Silva, who he faced in the Octagon back in 2008, when the Brazilian was at the peak of his powers.

“When he fought DC, when he was on his feet you could see that he’s still one of the best strikers in the world,” said Côté. “You know, this guy in my mind, when he was in his prime, was the best fighter in history. Nobody was very close to getting compared to him.”

Despite cautioning Silva, Côté said he will still be picking the former middleweight champion ahead of Brunson, saying:

“I’ll go with ‘The Spider’ because Brunson is so aggressive and Anderson Silva is one of the best counterpunchers in the business. Especially if Brunson doing what he did in his last fight against Whittaker. He was way too aggressive. If he’s still doing that Silva is going to hurt him.”

Côté also stated that he wished for Silva to end his career on a high, with many fans and fighters expecting Silva to retire if he does beat Brunson.

“I don’t think this guy deserves to retire on a loss. After everything he did in the sport and after he’s been one of the greatest champions in MMA history he really does deserve to retire with a win, for sure.”
