For the 11th time in 12 pro fights, Thatch finished in the first round, crumbling Thiago was a body kick that caused the grizzled veteran to tap out just 2:10 in the first round. It was only the second time in Thiago’s career he’s been stopped.
Thatch has won his 11 fight in a total time of 14 minutes and 43 seconds.
“I’m happy,” he said moments after the UFC Fight Night: Belfort vs. Henderson win. “It’s very normal. I’m very excited. I’m still nervous, too.”
Trying to defuse Thatch’s standup game, Thiago attempted to bring the fight to the ground three times, completing only one takedown, and only for a few seconds as Thatch popped back to his feet.
With the fight in his realm, Thatch battered Thiago with a flurry against the cage. But the finish came as Thatch stepped in with a knee. Thiago immediately fell down on all fours. Thatch followed him with ground strikes, but Thiago tapped as ref Dan Miragliotta stepped in to stop the action.
The newcomer has now won both of his UFC bouts since signing to the organization over the summer, improving to 10-1 overall.
Thiago is now 15-6, suffering his third loss in four fights.
