Monday afternoon, UFC President Dana White announced that Dominick Cruz was forced to withdraw from the upcoming bantamweight title unification bout with Renan Barao set to headline UFC 169 on February 1 in Newark, New Jersey.

As a result of his latest injury, “The Dominator” has been stripped of the bantamweight title, with Barao now ascending to the top of the 135-pound weight class, and Cruz’s long-time rival Urijah Faber will fill his place opposite the Brazilian standout on the Super Bowl Saturday pay-per-view.

The 28-year-old Alliance MMA representative has not fought since October 1, 2011 after having two surgeries to repair a torn ACL. Now dealing with a torn groin, there is no immediate timetable available for Cruz’s return to action.

Monday’s news produced an immediate impact on the latest version of the media-generated UFC Rankings, presented by RAM, as the former bantamweight champion dropped out of the division’s Top 15 entirely, though he did maintain his place in the pound-for-pound ranks, holding steady at No. 13.

Other changes of note include Tarec Saffiedine climbing one place in the welterweight rankings following his win over Hyun Gyu Lim in the main event of Saturday’s fight card in Singapore, and lightweights Michael Johnson and Rustam Khabilov each climbing one place to No. 13 and 14 respectively, jumping ahead of Ultimate Fighter Season 1 winner Diego Sanchez, who slips to No. 15 in the 155-pound weight class.
