UFC 172: Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira set for April 26 in Baltimore
After several stops and starts in the scheduling of Jon Jones’ next title defense, a date and location is now finalized. Jones and No. 1 contender Glover Teixeira will tangle at the Baltimore Arena on April 26 at the event that will be numbered UFC 172.
The Baltimore Sun reported the date on Friday, which was subsequently confirmed by the UFC. The event will be the promotion’s first-ever trip to Maryland.
At various times, the Jones-Teixeira matchup was linked to dates at UFC 169, 170 and 171, but none of those dates worked out, mostly because Jones wanted some time off after a grueling matchup last September with Alexander Gustafsson.
That bout, which Jones went on to win by unanimous decision in a match most considered 2013’s best fight of the year, marked Jones’ sixth consecutive light-heavyweight title defense. That set a divisional record, breaking Tito Ortiz’s long-standing record.
The 26-year-old Jones is now 19-1 overall, and he is a strong favorite to hold on to the belt, as evidenced by the opening odds which were 6-to-1 in his favor. If he wins, he may move on to a rematch with Gustafsson, who first has to get past Jimi Manuwa in March.
However, some expect Teixeira to be an extremely difficult matchup for Jones. The 34-year-old Brazilian has won 20 straight fights dating back to 2006, and has stopped four of his five octagon opponents since joining the promotion in 2012.
