Great MMA Debate podcast: Dan Henderson will decide future after Shogun fight
MAR 17, 2014 4:15p ET
This week's edition of the Great MMA Debate podcast welcomes UFC legend Dan Henderson and CB Dollaway to the show as well as discussing the fallout from UFC 171 over the weekend.
Henderson drops by to discuss his upcoming rematch with Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua, his new UFC deal and the recent decision by the Nevada and Brazilian commissions to ban testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) from athletes who are competing there. Henderson has been an open TRT user for years, all while under the watchful eye of the state athletic commissions, and while he'll go along with whatever rules they make he believes ultimately they are throwing the baby out with the bath water.
"I feel like if they really wanted to make a statement they should have done more drug testing," Henderson said. "Implemented no advance noticed, random drug testing. Show up guy's houses at odd hours and make them give blood and pee in a cup."
Henderson will be allowed to use TRT for his upcoming fight against Rua, but that will be the last time he'll be granted an exemption if competing in Brazil or if he goes back to fight in Las Vegas at a later date. Some athletes, including Henderson's former teammate Chael Sonnen, have said that not having TRT could bring on early retirement for the fighter that really needed the controversial treatment.
Henderson at 43-years of age isn't ready to make that strong of a declaration, but it's something he knows he'll have to address after his fight with Rua is over.
"I'm pretty much going to get this fight handled and then worry about the changes later," Henderson said. "That's my mindset and I don't need to make any decisions now. I'm going to have to do some research and see what's out there."
UFC Fight Night co-main event fighter CB Dollaway also joins the podcast to discuss his upcoming fight with Cezar 'Mutante' Ferreira, the controversial decision in his last fight, and he answers some random questions from us including the song you'd never think he'd be listening to when you're not around.
"Probably some Miley Cyrus, some upbeat stuff. When I'm trying to work out, some of her songs, 'Wrecking Ball' is a pretty good song when you're working out," Dollaway admitted. "I'm not playing that when people get in my car."
All this plus a full review of UFC 171 and debate surrounding the next contender in the welterweight division, Diego Sanchez's future as well as picks and predictions for UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Henderson 2.
