UFC Fight Night from Atlanta on Wednesday yielded some exciting affairs and sent a few fighters to the hospital when it was over, most notable among them middleweight prospect Derek Brunson.
The former college wrestler engaged in a back and forth war with Olympic silver medalist Yoel Romero while earning 'Fight of the Night' honors, but when it was over he had to spend the rest of his night in the hospital prepping to have surgery.
According to UFC president Dana White, Brunson suffered a broken jaw in his battle with Romero and following the diagnosis was readying for surgery to repair the injury.
Brunson put on an outstanding effort through the first two rounds beating Romero to the punch in each exchange while taking down the Cuban wrestler on several occasions. The third round told a much different story, however, as Romero battled back before getting the fight stopped after cracking Brunson with punches on the feet and a nasty series of elbows to the body on the ground.
The loss marks Brunson's first defeat in the UFC after starting out his career at a perfect 2-0. Despite the setback, Brunson will probably see a surge in popularity and acknowledgement after putting on a valiant effort against one of the most dangerous middleweight prospects in the division.
On Thursday morning, Brunson took to his personal Facebook page to update fans on his condition as well. While the loss still stings, Brunson seems to be in good spirits after suffering the fractured jaw.
Brunson will now take some much needed time off to allow his broken jaw to heal before returning to action in the UFC.
