Cowboy Cerrone vs. Jim Miller headlines UFC Fight Night in Atlantic City
MAY 02, 2014 12:38a ET
It was less than 24 hours ago that rumors swirled about Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone possibly facing top 10 ranked lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov in a fight later this year. As the story goes, the fight was being talked about for late summer, but sitting around and waiting for anything just isn't Cerrone's style.
So instead of booking him against Nurmagomedov, the UFC has opted to shift Cerrone into a main event fight against another top 10 fighter as Jim Miller gets the call face him in the newly announced main event for the upcoming UFC Fight Night card in Atlantic City on July 16. The show takes place at the Revel Casino Hotel, which was also the site of the UFC Fight Night card in 2012 featuring the main event between Gray Maynard and Clay Guida.
Miller is fresh off a win over Yancy Medeiros at last weekend's UFC 172 card in Baltimore, which marked his second victory in a row and third out of his last four fights overall. The long time UFC lightweight contender is also a native of New Jersey and will compete in his home state for the fifth time in his UFC career.
As for Cerrone, he gets to fight again this summer just as he requested after submitting Muay Thai specialist Edson Barboza at the FOX UFC Saturday card in Orlando in April. Cerrone has said on numerous occasions he wants to fight at least six times this year, and this will mark his third bout already at just over the halfway point in 2014.
The two lightweights will clash in a bout that has fireworks written all over it. Cerrone and Miller combined have won 15 post fight awards from the UFC including three 'Fight of the Night' trophies.
In other words this should be a barnburner.
The UFC Fight Night card from Atlantic City will air on FOX Sports 1 on Wednesday night, July 16.
