The UFC’s return to San Jose has its first matchup.
Light-heavyweight standouts Anthony Johnson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira have agreed to meet in the July 26 UFC on FOX event, FOX Sports has learned.
UFC officials confirmed the matchup, which will take place as a featured bout on the main card.
Just two weeks ago, Johnson rumbled back onto the UFC scene after a two-year absence, upsetting Phil Davis in dominant fashion in earning a unanimous decision victory. The one-sided win vaulted Johnson all the way up to No. 5 in the latest rankings.
The victory marked his debut as a 205-pounder in the UFC after spending most of his time in the octagon as a welterweight.
Johnson is 17-4 in his career.
In Nogueira (21-5), he’ll be taking on a talented all-around fighter who has had his biggest trouble just trying to stay healthy. His last time out, the 37-year-old Brazilian had his biggest UFC win, topping Rashad Evans, but that win was over a year ago, and since then, he’s been forced to withdraw from fights with both Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Alexander Gustafsson due to injury.
His inactivity eventually knocked him off the rankings, where he reached as high as No. 5.
This will mark the fourth straight year the UFC returns to San Jose’s SAP Center (formerly known as the HP Pavilion) for an event. A 2013 show was headlined by a lightweight title fight pitting Benson Henderson against Gilbert Melendez.
