Two stabbed in the stands during UFC 169 in Newark
Newark police told NJ.com that two people were indeed stabbed in the stands during the event at Prudential Center on Saturday night. Samuel DeMaio, Newark’s police director, said the victims, who were not identified, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
There was a suspect arrested in the incident, DeMaio said. The director did not identify the assailant or say where the attack took place.
“We are working with the Newark Police Department on a open investigation regarding an incident that took place during UFC 169.”
There was a commotion in the stands during the first fight of the main card between Abel Trujillo and Jamie Varner. Twitter was buzzing about a possible stabbing and people being hit by chairs, but there were conflicting reports.
Two security guards told FOX Sports that someone was cut falling onto a railing and there was no stabbing. Another security guard said there was a stabbing, but he did not have firsthand information of the incident.
Messages left with Newark police media relations have gone unreturned.
