Don’t let that hilarious blonde wig fool you. Khabib Nurmagomedov is probably not awesome at parties. Actually, he probably doesn’t show up to them in the first place.
Nurmagomedov made some statements recently that would make some of the old-school UFC guys like Chuck Liddell and Mark Coleman shake their damn heads. The Dagestani lightweight contender told ProSports.ru that he doesn’t drink, go out to clubs or bother with "girls."
"Alcohol and girls stand in a way of an athlete," Nurmagomedov said (translated by Low Kick). "They spoil him and make him weak."
In fairness to Nurmagomedov, doing some of those above things is against his religion. He is a devout Muslim and just took part in the month-long fasting of Ramadan. That’s the main reason why we haven’t seen him fight since April. The other reason is that he injured his knee just minutes after signing a bout agreement to take on Donald Cerrone at UFC 178 on Sept. 27.
"A couple of times they called me with them to the club," Nurmagomedov said of other fighters. "I told them I’m a Muslim. And they were like ‘Come on, we know two Muslims and they visit the clubs with us all the time!’ I have tried to explain them, that a Muslim is not ideal, but Islam is."
That’s deep. We can hate on a guy who is loyal to his beliefs. Even if he isn’t someone we want to go have a beer with.
But who needs drinks really? Nurmagomedov gets his kicks by beating up other men. And possibly bears.
"There are fighters in America who can drink on Friday and Saturday," Nurmagomedov said. "After an event I saw it myself in the hotel — 80 percent of them are already drunk. Not the champs, but middle-of-the-pack guys, guys like one win, two losses."
Nurmagomedov is undefeated. Coincidence? Maybe not.
