Rafael Nadal ends season early to recover from wrist injury

Published Nov. 15, 2016 1:58 p.m. ET

Rafael Nadal has decided to cut his 2016 tennis season short in order to properly treat and recover from a left wrist injury in time for next year.

The 30-year-old Spaniard said he is still hampered by the wrist injury — which kept him out of commission for over more than two months and forced him to pull out of the French Open and miss Wimbledon this year — and that now it's "time to rest and start preparing intensively" for next season.

Nadal also admitted that his desire to play in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics (where he won doubles gold with Marc Lopez) got him back on the court prematurely, and he has played in pain ever since.

The world's No. 6-ranked player said he will not compete next week in Basel or in Paris-Bercy next month. He is also out of the ATP Finals in London.
