Czechs advance to Davis Cup semis

Defending champion Czech Republic has beaten Kazakhstan to advance to the Davis Cup semifinals.

Lukas Rosol defeated Evgeny Korolev 7-6 (5), 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-2 on Sunday in the first reverse singles to secure an insurmountable 3-1 lead over Kazakhstan in the World Group quarterfinal series.

The Czechs won both opening singles on Friday, but Kazakhstan cut the lead by winning a doubles match on Saturday.

After trading the first two sets, Lukas fired his 30th ace in the match to win the third set on a tiebreaker. He broke Korolev twice in the fourth set and served the match out.

The Czech Republic beat Spain last year for its first title since 1980.

The winner will face either France or Argentina in September.
