NEW YORK (AP)

A look at the U.S. Open, the year's last Grand Slam tennis tournament:

Surface: Hard courts.

Site: The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Schedule: The two-week tournament starts Monday. The women's singles final is Sept. 8; the men's singles final is Sept. 9.

2011 Men's Singles Champion: Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

2011 Women's Singles Champion: Sam Stosur of Australia.

Last Year: Djokovic won his first U.S. Open title, coming back to erase match points and beat Roger Federer in the semifinals, before defeating defending champion Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1 in the final. Stosur surprisingly dominated Serena Williams 6-2, 6-3 in the women's final to earn her first Grand Slam trophy.

Not There This Year: Nadal, the 2010 U.S. Open champion and runner-up a year ago, pulled out of the tournament. Bothered by bad knees, he also missed the London Olympics.

Farewell: Three-time U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters, who is 29, says this year's tournament at Flushing Meadows will be the last event of her career. She has a 21-match winning streak at the Open.

Key Statistic: Federer is playing in his 52nd consecutive Grand Slam tournament - all four, every year, since the start of 2000. Nadal withdrew for the second time in the past 14 majors.

Rain, Rain, Go Away: 4 - Consecutive years that rain has forced the U.S. Open men's final to be played on Monday, instead of the scheduled Sunday.

Prize Money: A total of at least $25.5 million, with $1.9 million each for the men's and women's singles champions.
