Switzerland, not surprisingly, picked Roger Federer to be on its team for a Davis Cup relegation playoff at the Netherlands next week. Whether he'll actually show up is unclear.

ROGER, ROGER

Roger Federer has won a few trophies in his day. A look at his Grand Slam triumphs.

Federer hopes to be participating in the U.S. Open final in New York this Sunday, and he said last weekend he doesn't know whether he will be at the Davis Cup matches.

The Swiss tennis federation acknowledged Tuesday the 17-time Grand Slam champion is undecided about playing in Amsterdam. Lineups can be changed as late as one hour before the Sept. 13 draw.

The top-ranked Federer was put on the roster, along with No. 19 Stanislas Wawrinka, No. 134 Marco Chiudinelli and No. 410 Henri Laaksonen.

Federer is into the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows, while Wawrinka was scheduled to play defending U.S. Open champion Novak Djokovic in a fourth-round match Tuesday. The 20-year-old Laaksonen switched nationality from Finland.

Switzerland will play the Dutch on outdoor clay courts. The winner stays in the top-tier, 16-nation world group.

Asked after his third-round match Saturday whether he'll be part of the Swiss team in Amsterdam, Federer answered: ''Probably take a decision soon. It's, obviously, one that's an interesting choice of surface from their side, playing outdoors on clay. But, then again, you know, it's an exciting (matchup), because Dutch fans are always amazing.''
