Serena, Hewitt are top seeds at Roland Garros

Paris, France (Sports Network) - World No. 1 stars of the United States and of Australia have been installed as the top seeds for the 2003 French Open, which will commence Monday at Roland Garros. Williams is the reigning French Open, Wimbledon, U.S. Open and Australian Open champion, while the reigning Wimbledon and former U.S. Open titlist Hewitt is seeking his first-ever French Open championship. The 21-year-old Williams, who is 16-3 lifetime at Roland Garros, is a sparkling 26-2 this season, but was a semifinal loser against French star in last week's Italian Open semifinals. Williams is followed by Belgian , her older sister Venus, Belgian -Hardenne and Mauresmo. Americans hold down seeds 6-8, with , and . Three-time French Open champ of the U.S. is the 12th seed. Hewitt has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals here, which he did in 2001 only to lose to Juan Carlos Ferrero, last year's Roland Garros runner-up to fellow Spaniard . The top-seeded Hewitt is followed by 1999 French winner , Ferrero, 1998 titlist and . American is seeded sixth, while the reigning champion Costa holds the ninth spot. French Open seeds are based on the current ATP and WTA world rankings.
