Tennis 199 43 US Open women to watch 30105528 Serena Williams Serena+Williams Tennis

After a year-long absence from the courts, Serena Williams played two rounds at Eastbourne and reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon. That was just her warmup. The Serena show got underway back in the States with back-to-back premiere wins at Standford and Toronto. She bowed out in Cincinnati with a sore toe and was awarded the No. 28 seed in the US Open. No. 28? The US Open is sticking to the rankings, folks, even for the three-time champ. Look out.

World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki's lackluster play this summer has been upstaged by her summer romance with golfer Rory McIlroy. But as the US Open draws near, the question remains: when will Caro win her first Slam? The Dane receives the No. 1 seed in the draw which should aid her quest, but it hasn't helped her to date.

Tennis 199 43 US Open women to watch 30105525 Maria Sharapova Maria+Sharapova Tennis

After playing in the Wimbledon final, the 2006 US Open champion took nearly a month off before reaching the Stanford quarterfinals where she was stunned by a resurgent Serena Williams who went on to win. Sharapova lost in Toronto's second round to Galina Voskoboeva (who?) before finding her game again in Cincinnati to win her second title of the year. There Sharapova found a way past four top-15 players to earn the title, which is a great sign of things to come for her in New York.

Tennis 199 43 US Open women to watch 30105526 Vera Zvonareva Vera+Zvonareva Tennis

You can't underestimate the No. 2 player in the world, Vera Zvonareva. The Russian reached the 2010 US Open final and has done a nice job this year quietly winning titles in Doha and Baku as well as reaching the final in Carlsbad and semis in Cincinnati. With the majority of the top 20 players struggling with injury, Zvonareva could be a longshot to win her first Slam.

Tennis 199 43 US Open women to watch 30107301 Li Na Li+Na Tennis

China's Li Na made history by reaching the Australian Open final and rewrote the book after winning the French Open. However, this summer, Li's been fairly quiet, only playing four tourneys and never eclipsing the second round. Li didn't play in New York last year and lost in the first round in 2009, so the No. 6 seed has her work cut out for her.

Tennis 199 43 US Open women to watch 30105522 Sabine Lisicki Sabine+Lisicki+ Tennis

Sabine Lisicki won Birmingham and followed it up with a Wimbledon semifinal date. Since then, the German, seeded No. 22 at the US Open, reached the semifinals in Standford and the quarters in Carlsbad before a rare-this-year first-round loss in Cincinnati to Shahar Peer. Lisicki has seemed to regain the momentum lost back in 2010 when an ankle injury kept her sidelined for many, many months. Welcome back, Sabine.

Tennis 199 43 US Open women to watch 30105530 Petra Kvitova Petra+Kvitova+ Tennis

The No. 5 seed, and Wimbledon winner, Petra Kvitova reached the quarters in Flushing Meadows in 2010, so a run deep into the second week for the Czech is not only unheard of, but is expected at this point. Kvitova's mental toughness will carry her as far as her injury-prone body, which is no doubt partially responsible for back-to-back losses to Andrea Petkovic in Toronto and Cincinnati earlier this month.

Victoria Azarenka earns the No. 4 seed in this year's US Open. The winner in Miami and Marbella reached the semis at Wimbledon and Toronto, and if she can ward off the strain in her right hand that caused her to withdraw in Cincinnati she should see a second week in New York.

Former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic reached her second final of the year earlier this month in Cincinnati before losing to Maria Sharapova. The self-proclaimed dark horse in Cincy has yet to win a Slam, but is always a threat to shake up any draw. We'll see what happens in New York.

When healthy and focused, these three — Venus Williams, Andrea Petkovic and Samantha Stosur — can shake up any draw. While Venus is the only one to win a slam, Petkovic has come on strong this summer, reaching the quarterfinals in Toronto and semifinals in both Carlsbad and Cincinnati. 2010 French Open finalist Stosur showed signs of life this summer as well reaching the final in Toronto and quarters in Cincy.
