It’s a wide-open field in Sunday’s 98th Indianapolis 500. So wide open, in fact, that it’s hard to see a clear-cut favorite in the field of 33 drivers that will celebrate at the end of the race in the most famous Victory Lane in all of racing.

It’s also a race loaded with storylines.

Tony Kanaan is the defending winner of the Indianapolis 500 and he starts way back in 16th place after struggling in qualifying with his Target/Chip Ganassi Racing Dallara/Chevrolet. But Kanaan’s confidence on race day will be high after he was the fastest driver in the final practice session known as Carb Day on Friday at the .

IndyCar: Carpenter Wins Indy 500 Pole, Busch Qualifies 12th

Ed Carpenter won the Indianapolis 500 pole for the second straight year, posting a four-lap average of 231.067 mph.

He was the last of the nine fastest qualifiers to hit the track Sunday at . He knocked off on the last lap to start first on the May 25 race.

Roger Penske’s team got off to a fast start on a slow day at Indianapolis.

Less than 24 hours after working feverishly to convert three cars from road-course setups to oval setups, the winningest owner in Indianapolis 500 swept the top three spots on the first day of practice Sunday.

Australia’s Will Power finished with a fast lap of 223.057 mph, Colombia’s was second at 222.502 and Brazil’s Helio Castroneves was third at 222.373. Only three other drivers topped 222.

Will Power and Penske Racing are back in a familiar position at Barber Motorsports Park: Starting in the pole position at a track where they dominated until last year.

Power, a two-time winner, came out on top in a Fast Six qualifying Saturday that featured five drivers from IndyCar powerhouse teams Penske, Andretti Autosport and Ganassi Racing.
