Mercedes boss says that tension between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton is to be expected given that they are fighting each other for the World Championship – and have a significant advantage over the opposition.

The Spanish GP was the fifth race in a row to see every lap led by a Mercedes. It’s a rare achievement, and it’s worth noting that only on two previous occasions – with McLaren in 1988 and Williams in 1992 – has one team proved utterly dominant. In the case of Williams, that run ended at round six in Monaco, although in 1988 McLaren kept its record up until the eighth race.

However, despite the flying start to the season, Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff remains cautious.

Mercedes GP Executive Director Toto Wolff admits that he would regard it as a failure if Mercedes does not win the 2014 World Championship – although he insists that the team’s advantage is not as big as outsiders might think.

“I don’t see it as a big advantage, to be honest,” he said. “You can see if you have a DNF, you lose points. McLaren is leading the constructors’, So we cannot pause in the whole thing. Yes, we have a little bit of a margin at the moment, and losing that margin now is something that I would consider as a failure.”
