Chad Reed heard the whispers and read the stories about how he was washed up as a motocross rider. As his winless streak grew, the 31-year-old Aussie began to wonder if it was indeed time to park his bike for good.

Everything changed with last weekend’s win in Anaheim, Calif.

Pulling ahead late in a wild race filled with crashes and numerous lead changes, Reed won for the first time since 2012, ending a 22-race winless streak and giving him the boost of confidence he needed.

The 40th Anniversary of Monster Energy was expected to be a celebration of history and honoring the men who shaped the sport into what it is today. At the end of 20 laps in the 450SX Class main event, the entire industry couldn’t help but feel nostalgic after Chad Reed emerged victorious, passing and fending off his longtime rival to do so.

Each week, The Holeshot will provide 23 takeaways – a full starting gate – from the most recent round of action.

1. I knew 2 would be critical to Reed’s hopes in 2014, but I think that could be an understatement based on how he won that race. The veteran lurked in the back of the lead pack for nearly the entire main event and put on a late charge in the closing laps to move into the lead and run away.

In front of 40,682 fans at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., Chad Reed became the third rider in as many races to capture a 450SX main event win this season.

On a night celebrating past champions of the sport, it was only fitting for Reed – the 2004 and 2008 Supercross Champion – to make a late-race pass on another two-time series Champion James Stewart for the win.
