In an effort to bolster its Daytona Prototype title attack, Chip Ganassi Racing will field a second Riley-BMW in next month’s Continental Tire Sports Car Festival at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (Live!, FOX Sports 1).
The multi-time and defending DP champions confirmed Monday that two-time IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti will pilot the No. 02 entry, which will carry sponsorship from Cessna.
It will run alongside the No. 01 Telcel-backed Riley-BMW of Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas, who currently trail championship leaders Jordan Taylor and Max Angelelli by 5 points heading into the penultimate round of the season.
CGR, meanwhile, currently enjoys a 14-point lead in the DP teams’ championship.
Mazda Raceway will mark the third event Ganassi has fielded two cars this season, with 2013 Indy 500 winner Tony Kanaan and BMW factory driver Joey Hand having most recently piloted the No. 02 entry at the Brickyard last month.
“Anytime you can pair two of the best Indy car drivers out there in the same car makes for an immediate contender,” said CGR teams President Steve Lauletta.
“We try and assemble an impressive lineup in the No. 02 car for the Rolex 24 At Daytona each season, and this year we’ve been able to provide more opportunities for our sponsors like with Tony Kanaan and Joey Hand at Indianapolis, and now Scott and Dario for Cessna at Laguna Seca.”Chip Ganassi Racing, Dario Franchitti, GRAND-AM, Scott Dixon, Sports Cars
