Richard Westbrook saved the best for last, as the Spirit of Daytona driver claimed a crucial pole position for Saturday’s Chevrolet Sports Car Classic.

Westbrook took his No. 90 DP to the top spot with less than three minutes on the clock, but it looked like he was beaten when the No. 1 Extreme Speed Motorsports HPD ARX-03b of Ryan Dalziel posted a 1:25.029 in the dying stages of the heated 15-minute session.

With the Ford-powered teams packing up early, DPs led the way in the third and final day of testing at the Roar Before the Rolex 24.

A 1:39.748 lap time by the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona entry of Richard Westbrook was the quickest on Sunday but it was Christian Fittipaldi’s 1:38.630 lap in the No. 5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP, set in Friday’s opening session, that stood as the best of the weekend.

Richard Westbrook escaped injury following a massive accident Tuesday at Daytona International Speedway in testing.

The Englishman’s No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP suffered an unidentified failure while braking into the high-speed Turn 1 section on the 3.56-mile oval/road course, sending the car airborne and into a series of rolls, according to multiple eyewitness.

After a disastrous season, which has seen only a single podium finish, brought a bit of sunshine to the squad Saturday, by claiming pole for Sunday’s Continental Tire Sports Car Festival.

The GM driver, normally tasked with watching his co-driver Ricky Taylor qualify, reeled off a best time of 1:21.557 in the Coyote-chassied .

He edged out the No. 10 DP of Max Angelelli by a mere 0.021 seconds to give SDR its first pole of the season.
